Valentine's Day email marketing works best as a 3.5 week campaign. Start around Jan 20. Send shipping cutoffs in the first and second weeks of February. Switch to gift cards and local pickup after the last ship date. NRF projected a record $29.1B in Valentine's spending for 2026, or $199.78 per person, and 38% of shoppers planned to buy online.
For a D2C brand, Valentine's Day is the first real full-price gifting moment after the holidays. It lands 6 to 8 weeks after BFCM, inside the window when you want holiday buyers to order again. Used well, it moves them without a discount.
This post is part of our Q1 repeat purchase plan, and the second step after retaining your Black Friday customers through December. It assumes your list is clean and your segments are built. If not, start with list cleaning after BFCM.
Who actually buys for Valentine's Day?
More people than partners. NRF's 2026 survey of 7,791 US adults, fielded Jan 2 to 8, found that 55% of consumers planned to celebrate.

By gift type, 56% planned to buy candy, 41% flowers, 41% greeting cards, 39% an evening out and 25% jewelry. Jewelry was the largest dollar category at $7B, followed by an evening out at $6.3B and clothing at $3.5B.
NRF also found that 31% of people not celebrating planned to mark the day some other way. That is your self-purchase and Galentine's audience.
When should you start sending Valentine's emails?
Around Jan 20. Klaviyo's 2026 Valentine's analysis, covering Jan 26 to Feb 14 across its customers, found momentum building "nearly 3 weeks before February 14" while purchases were "back-weighted toward the end of the season." Shoppers browse early and buy late. Klaviyo also reported product views up nearly 30% year over year.
So your early sends do discovery work. Your late sends close.
The 2027 calendar has two quirks. Feb 14 falls on a Sunday, so most gifts must arrive by Friday Feb 12 or Saturday Feb 13. And Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for Feb 14, 2027, the first played on Valentine's Day. Expect Sunday evening attention to be split. Front-load your final sends to Thursday and Friday.
What does a Valentine's email and SMS calendar look like?
Dates are for 2027. Use your 60 day engaged segment for campaigns, and your 30 day segment for the closing sends.

That is 8 emails and 3 SMS over 3.5 weeks. If you send fewer than 2 campaigns a week the rest of the year, cut it to 5 emails: Jan 20, Feb 1, Feb 3, Feb 9 and Feb 13.
Exclude anyone who placed a Valentine's order from all sends after their purchase. A Placed Order filter since Jan 20 handles it.
How do you set Valentine's shipping cutoff dates?
Work back from Friday Feb 12. Use your real fulfillment time, then the carrier's transit time.
Shopify's carrier comparison lists USPS Ground Advantage at 2 to 5 business days and Priority Mail at 1 to 3 business days, including Saturdays. With 1 business day to pick and pack:
| Shipping method |
Ships by |
Order by |
| USPS Ground Advantage (2 to 5 business days) |
Thu Feb 4 |
Wed Feb 3 |
| USPS Priority Mail (1 to 3 days incl. Saturday) |
Wed Feb 10 |
Tue Feb 9 |
| Digital gift card |
Instant or scheduled |
Sun Feb 14 |
Treat these as planning numbers. Pad by a day if your warehouse is slower in early February or if winter weather is forecast.
Put the date in the subject line. "Order by Wed Feb 3 for Valentine's delivery" beats "Don't miss out." Repeat the cutoff in a banner at the top of every send that week, and on the site header.
What should you send for him, for her, for self and for Galentine's?
Split by recipient. Your buyer chooses who the gift is for.
- For a partner. Lead with 3 to 5 gift sets at fixed prices: $35, $60, $100. NRF's top categories are candy, flowers, cards, an evening out and jewelry. If you sell none of those, position against them: "Better than flowers. Lasts longer than a weekend."
- For him. Build a short edit of unisex or men's products. Subject line example: "12 gifts he'll actually use."
- For self. Send on Feb 8 to past buyers. Frame it as a treat with no gift wrap needed. Subject line: "No date required."
- For Galentine's. Friends-gifting was 33% of celebrators in NRF's data. Push small items, $15 to $30, and multi-packs. Galentine's Day falls on Saturday Feb 13, 2027.
- For pets. If you sell pet products, 35% of celebrators planned a pet gift. That is a dedicated send.
Use the gift buyer data from Q4. Our holiday gift buyer segmentation guide explains how to flag profiles who bought gifts in December. They are your most likely Valentine's buyers.
When should you send Valentine's SMS?
Late, and only when a deadline is real. Klaviyo's analysis found that on Feb 14, 2026, more than 40% of SMS campaigns referenced Valentine's Day. Text message revenue rose 25% year over year in the Valentine's period, against 13.8% for email. SMS works best close to the date.
Three sends are enough: standard shipping cutoff, priority shipping cutoff, and a last-call gift card. Send to people who showed intent first, such as email clickers since Jan 20.
Check quiet hours. Klaviyo's quiet hours article sets the US default at no sends before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. in the recipient's time zone. It also notes some states are stricter, such as Florida at 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Send cutoff texts at 11 a.m. local. That leaves time to order the same day.
For more on running both channels, see Klaviyo email and SMS together.
Should you discount for Valentine's Day?
Usually not, or lightly. Klaviyo found average Valentine's offers in email and SMS fell from 12% in 2025 to just over 10% in 2026. In health and beauty, offers fell from 17% to about 12%. Brands are discounting less for this occasion.
Since offers are shrinking for this occasion, compete on arrival and presentation. Better levers:
- Gift with purchase above your AOV, such as a mini or a card.
- Free gift wrap or a note at checkout.
- Bundled gift sets priced as one product.
If you ran BFCM at 25% off and January at full price, a 25% Valentine's sale undoes that work. See our January sale strategy for the margin math.
How do digital gift cards save the last 3 days?
After the Priority Mail cutoff, physical products cannot arrive in time. A gift card can. Shopify's gift card recipient fields let the buyer add the recipient's email, name, a message and a "Send on" date. Scheduled cards go out between about 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. in the purchaser's time zone. The feature needs an Online Store 2.0 theme on version 9.0.0 or later, such as Dawn.
Turn it on before Feb 1 and test it with a $1 card. Then your Feb 10, 12 and 13 sends have something to sell.
Many gift card recipients are new customers you did not pay to acquire. Add the recipient to your post-purchase flow when they redeem.
When is Valentine's Day email marketing not worth it?
When the gift does not fit the occasion. Klaviyo found jewelry leading Valentine's messaging, with about 31% of jewelry campaigns referencing the holiday in 2026, and food and beverage and pet close behind. Electronics, toys and sporting goods leaned in "far less."
Skip or scale down if you sell:
- Mattresses, furniture or appliances. Long consideration, high AOV, not a gift.
- Supplements tied to health conditions. A Valentine's angle reads as odd.
- Industrial or B2B-style products.
In those cases, send one light email around Feb 8 for self-purchase, or skip it entirely. Presidents' Day on Mon Feb 15, 2027 may suit high-AOV categories better. Test it. Put the effort into your segmentation and replenishment flows instead.
Most brands can run this in-house with Klaviyo and Shopify. If you want the calendar adapted to your catalog and shipping setup, you can book a call.
