For Black Friday in Klaviyo, email carries every send and SMS carries the 4 or 5 moments where speed matters: VIP early access, the Black Friday launch, the Cyber Monday last call and final hours. Text only consented US subscribers, outside quiet hours. Set Smart Sending per channel, because Klaviyo treats email and SMS separately.
This post covers channel roles, a send-by-send SMS plan, US compliance basics, cost math and how agencies plan both channels across many accounts. It builds on the full Klaviyo Black Friday setup for 2026.
Why does SMS matter more for BFCM 2026?
Because shoppers moved there. Klaviyo's BFCM 2025 results show text send volume up 34% and text revenue up 25% year over year. Email and text together drove 42% of total revenue, and 43% on peak days.
The same release reports that cross-channel shoppers placed 11% more orders and added 34% more items to cart. Two channels working together beat either one alone.
That does not mean text everything. SMS costs money per message, interrupts people more than email and carries legal risk. The job is to pick the sends where a text earns its place.
| SMS | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role in BFCM | Full story: offer, products, terms, reassurance | Fast trigger: offer live, deadline close |
| Sends in our calendar | All 13 | 4 core, 1 optional |
| Length | Full layout with product rows | One message, ideally one segment |
| Cost model | Included in your Klaviyo email plan | Paid per message, per recipient |
| Consent | Email marketing consent | Separate SMS consent, express written |
| Timing limits | None by law | Quiet hours by recipient time zone |
Which BFCM sends should also get an SMS?
Text the moments where a few hours change the outcome. Skip texts for content-heavy sends like the gift guide. Here is how we map SMS onto the 13-send calendar.
| # | Send | Date | SMS | Why | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sale teaser | Wed Nov 18 | Yes | No | Low urgency, saves budget |
| 2 | Gift guide | Fri Nov 20 | Yes | No | Needs images and browsing |
| 3 | VIP early access | Tue Nov 24 | Yes | Yes | Exclusive offer, SMS opt-in reward |
| 4 | Black Friday launch | Fri Nov 27, morning | Yes | Yes | Biggest moment of the week |
| 5 | Bestsellers at sale price | Fri Nov 27, evening | Yes | No | Same day as send 4 |
| 6 | Weekend push | Sat Nov 28 | Yes | No | Shipping and returns need space |
| 7 | Last weekend day, Cyber Monday tease | Sun Nov 29 | Yes | No | Tease works fine by email |
| 8 | Cyber Monday launch | Mon Nov 30, morning | Yes | No | Email opens the day |
| 9 | Cyber Monday last call | Mon Nov 30, evening | Yes | Yes | Hard deadline, text wins |
| 10 | Giving Tuesday | Tue Dec 1 | Yes | No | Story-driven, email suits it |
| 11 | Sale extended | Tue Dec 1 | Yes | Optional | Use if Cyber Monday ran short of target |
| 12 | Final hours | Wed Dec 2 | Yes | Yes | Last deadline of the sale |
| 13 | Thank you + holiday shipping cutoff | Fri Dec 4 | Yes | No | Service message, email is enough |
That gives 4 core texts and 1 optional. On the Lean plan (sends 4, 5, 8 and 9), text sends 4 and 9 only. On the Essential plan, add send 3.
Notice the pattern: one text per day at most. That matters for Smart Sending, covered below.
What are the US SMS consent rules for Black Friday?
You need express written consent before you text anyone a marketing message. Klaviyo's US SMS compliance overview says consent must include explicit language that the person agrees to receive recurring marketing texts at the number they gave you. The same page puts TCPA penalties at $500 to $1,500 per violation.
The practical rules for BFCM:
- Email consent is not SMS consent. Klaviyo's SMS consent guide requires a separate checkbox or button for SMS, with disclosure language placed above it.
- Every text needs a working opt-out. Replying STOP is the standard. Klaviyo's guidance says opt-outs should be honored within 10 days.
- Abandoned cart flows need double opt-in in the US, per Klaviyo's consent guide.
- Do not text purchased or imported lists without documented consent for each number.
If your SMS list is small going into November, use early access as the opt-in reason. Our Black Friday early access email guide covers that offer.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. Check your consent language with counsel before peak week.
How do quiet hours work in Klaviyo SMS?
The TCPA bars telephone solicitation, including texts, before 8am and after 9pm in the recipient's time zone, per Klaviyo's compliance summary. Some states go further. Klaviyo's quiet hours guide for flows notes that Florida limits sending to 8am to 8pm.
For US and Canadian numbers, Klaviyo applies quiet hours using the phone number's area code by default. You can switch the basis to the country's eastern time zone instead. In flows, a recipient who hits quiet hours waits in the queue until the next allowed time.
Campaigns behave differently. Klaviyo's quiet hours in campaigns feature checks each recipient at send time. You choose to delay the message until quiet hours end or skip that recipient.
For BFCM, the evening sends are the risk. A Cyber Monday last call text scheduled at 7:30pm Eastern hits Florida close to its 8pm cutoff. Schedule evening texts for late afternoon Eastern, and choose skip over delay for deadline messages. A "last call" text that arrives the next morning is worse than no text.
How much will BFCM SMS cost in Klaviyo?
Klaviyo now bills mobile messages in dollars rather than credits. Its mobile messaging billing guide gives the formula: rate x recipients x message segments = total cost. Carrier fees are bundled into the rate. Rates vary by country and channel, and you see the dollar cost of a message before you send it.
Segments drive most of the surprise. A single SMS segment holds 160 standard characters, or 70 if you include an emoji or special characters. A 200-character text is billed as 2 segments, which doubles the cost of that send. MMS costs more than SMS because it carries an image or GIF.
Budget planning for November:
- Check your plan. Per Klaviyo's billing article, you prepay a monthly mobile messaging amount, and unused dollars do not carry over.
- Decide your overage setting now. When you hit a limit, Klaviyo lets you flex to the next tier, upgrade, or stop sending until the next cycle. Stopping mid Cyber Monday is the outcome to avoid.
- Check your sending number. Klaviyo's pricing page recommends a short code over a toll-free number if you text more than 95,000 people per month.
We have not listed a per-message rate here because Klaviyo shows it inside your account by region. Pull it from there and run the formula for each of your 4 or 5 texts.
How should Smart Sending work across email and SMS?
Separately. Klaviyo's Smart Sending guide states that Smart Sending for email and SMS is managed independently. An email does not block a text, and a text does not block an email.
Default windows are 16 hours for email and 24 hours for SMS. Both defaults create problems in BFCM week:
- Email. Sends 4 and 5 go out the same day, as do sends 8 and 9. A 16-hour window skips anyone who received the morning email. Turn off Smart Sending on the evening campaigns, or shorten the email window for the week.
- SMS. A 24-hour window blocks a second text on the same day. That is why our plan uses one text per day at most. Keep it on as a safety net.
Klaviyo also uses the phone number for SMS Smart Sending. Multiple profiles sharing one number are all skipped once that number gets a text. That protects households from duplicate messages.
Sorted's rule for the week: email Smart Sending off for same-day pairs, SMS Smart Sending on everywhere.
How do agencies plan email and SMS for many BFCM clients?
With one shared calendar and per-client settings. Every client runs the same 13-send skeleton with the same dates. What changes per account is consent volume, SMS budget, sending number type and offer.
A per-client checklist that scales:
- SMS list size and consent source for each account.
- Mobile messaging budget and overage setting, confirmed in writing with the client.
- Quiet hours setting (area code or eastern time) and a skip or delay choice for campaigns.
- Smart Sending windows for email and SMS, adjusted for same-day pairs.
- Text copy under 160 characters, with STOP language and no emoji unless budgeted.
Agencies running white-label delivery often hit capacity in mid November, when every client wants the same week. Our team sent 40M+ emails in BFCM week 2025 using this structure across accounts. If you want overflow capacity under your own brand, that is what our white-label team does.
