Black Friday Early Access Emails in Klaviyo: Segment, Timing, Copy
Send early access to your VIP segment on Tue Nov 24, gate it with Klaviyo unique coupon codes, and keep the email short: offer, deadline, one button.

A Black Friday early access email gives your best customers the sale before everyone else. In Klaviyo, send it to a VIP segment on Tue Nov 24, three days before Black Friday. Gate the offer with unique coupon codes so it cannot leak. Keep the email to one offer, one deadline and one button.
Early access is send 3 in the 13-send calendar we use across this series. It sits inside the full build covered in our Klaviyo Black Friday setup guide for 2026. This post covers the four decisions behind it: who gets it, when it goes out, how you gate it, and what the email says.
Who should get Black Friday early access?
Your VIP segment, and no one else. Early access only works if it feels earned. Send it to your whole list and it becomes a normal sale email with a different subject line.
Build the audience from the VIP definition in our Klaviyo BFCM segments post. That segment uses Placed Order at least 3 times, or Historic CLV above your top 10% cutoff. The people inside it have already proven they buy. If you need help picking thresholds, our older guide on D2C VIP customer segmentation walks through the logic.
Three groups worth adding on top of core VIPs:
SMS subscribers. Offering early access in exchange for a text opt-in grows your SMS list before peak week.
Recent high-intent browsers. People who viewed products several times in the last 30 days but have not bought.
Loyalty or subscription members, if you run a program.
Exclude anyone who bought in the last 14 days. They just paid full price, and an early discount email lands badly.
When should you send the early access email?
Tue Nov 24 is our default. Black Friday falls on Fri Nov 27, 2026, so that gives VIPs a 72-hour head start. It also keeps the send clear of Thanksgiving on Thu Nov 26, when inboxes fill up fast.
Shorter windows work too. Here is how the three common options compare.
Head start
Send date
Best for
Trade-off
72 hours
Tue Nov 24
Brands with limited stock or hero products
Longer window, more time for codes or links to spread
48 hours
Wed Nov 25
Most D2C brands with a mid-size VIP list
Lands close to Thanksgiving travel
24 hours
Thu Nov 26 (Thanksgiving)
Brands that want urgency over reach
Competes with holiday inbox volume
Whatever you pick, send one reminder 24 hours before the public launch. A short "your early access ends tomorrow" email to VIPs who have not purchased yet is enough. Use a Klaviyo segment that excludes anyone with a Placed Order event since the early access send.
How do you gate early access so the offer does not leak?
Gating decides whether early access stays exclusive. A shared code like VIPEARLY gets posted to coupon sites within hours. Your choice of gate depends on how much setup you can handle in November.

For most brands, unique coupon codes are the right default. They combine the email and the discount in one step.
The password option is a blunt tool. Shopify's password protection hides every page of the online store behind one landing page. That blocks all non-VIP traffic during your window, including paid ads. Use it only for a short, store-wide private sale.
Unlisted products are the middle ground. Shopify's Unlisted product status hides products from store search, collections and sales channels while keeping them reachable by direct URL. That suits early access bundles or VIP-only SKUs.
How do you set up Klaviyo unique coupon codes for Shopify?
Klaviyo creates the Shopify discount codes for you. Setup runs through Content > Coupons, according to Klaviyo's unique coupon codes guide for Shopify. You can create a fixed amount off, a percentage off or free shipping, and restrict it to products, collections or a minimum spend.
Five details matter for BFCM:
Generate codes before the campaign. For campaigns, Klaviyo requires you to generate at least as many codes as recipients. If you do not, the send is blocked.
Flows replenish automatically. If you trigger the reminder as a flow, codes generate as needed.
Dates run in UTC. Your Shopify store may run on Eastern or Pacific time. Set start and end dates with that offset in mind.
Expiration has a 24-hour buffer. Klaviyo states the actual expiration is always 24 hours past the date you set. Plan your public launch around that.
One code per SMS. Klaviyo allows one coupon code per text message.
Insert the code through the personalization menu by choosing Coupons. Send a test to yourself and redeem it at checkout before you schedule.
Should you use SMS opt-in as an early access lever?
Yes. Early access is one of the clearest reasons to give a shopper for joining your SMS list. "Text-only early access" is a concrete benefit, unlike "get updates."
Klaviyo lists several ways to collect consent, including sign-up forms, checkout consent on Shopify and email-based collection, in its SMS consent guide. Two rules from that guide apply directly here:
Disclosure language has to sit above the SMS consent checkbox or button.
SMS consent needs its own control. One checkbox cannot cover email and SMS.
A practical sequence: run a "Get early access by text" form from early November. Then send the Tue Nov 24 early access as both email and SMS to subscribers who opted in. Text is growing as a BFCM channel. Klaviyo reported that text send volume rose 34% and text revenue rose 25% year over year during BFCM 2025.
What subject lines work for a Black Friday early access email?
Lead with exclusivity and a clear end time. Skip the hype. VIPs open because the email is for them, not because it shouts.
Three examples to adapt:
Your Black Friday starts today (3 days early)
Sarah, early access is open until Friday 9am ET
Before we tell everyone: 30% off, just for you
Use first-name personalization only where your data is clean. A "Hi ," subject line hurts more than it helps. Keep preview text doing a second job: state the deadline or the product, not a repeat of the subject.
The discount in example 3 is a placeholder. Match it to your real offer. Klaviyo's BFCM 2025 data shows discounts fell 10% year over year while consumer spending rose 11%. A deep cut is not required for early access to work. Timing and access do the job.
What should the early access email look like?
Short. VIPs already know your brand. The email needs to answer three questions fast: what is the offer, when does it end, and where do I click.
A sample structure:
Block
Content
Purpose
Header
Logo, "VIP early access" label
Signals exclusivity before the scroll
Hero
Offer in one line, end date and time with time zone
Answers the two key questions
Code block
Unique coupon code, plus "applied at checkout" note
Removes friction
CTA button
"Shop early access"
One action only
Product row
3 to 4 bestsellers
Gives a starting point
Reassurance
Shipping cutoff, returns window
Handles objections
Footer
Standard unsubscribe and address
Compliance
One CTA, repeated at the bottom if the email runs long. No secondary offers, no blog links, no social feed. Every extra link splits clicks.
How does early access fit the rest of the BFCM week?
It opens the core sequence. In our calendar, VIP early access on Tue Nov 24 is followed by the Black Friday launch on Fri Nov 27 morning and the bestsellers send that evening. The Essential plan runs 6 sends: early access, both Black Friday sends, both Cyber Monday sends and the Sale extended email on Tue Dec 1.
Two rules keep VIPs from feeling spammed:
Suppress VIP purchasers from the next 2 sends. If someone bought during early access, skip them for the Black Friday launch.
Keep the VIP offer at least as good as the public one. If the public offer beats early access, VIPs notice.
Klaviyo reported repeat-customer revenue grew 13.5% year over year during BFCM 2025. Your existing customers carry more of peak week than most plans assume. Early access is how you treat them like it.
Our team sent 40M+ emails in BFCM week 2025. If you want the full calendar built and live in 7 to 14 days, the BFCM page lists the packages.
Want BFCM built for you?
We set up the segments, flows and every send in your Klaviyo. From $599, live in 7 to 14 days.
Between 24 and 72 hours before Black Friday. For 2026, that means Tue Nov 24, Wed Nov 25 or Thu Nov 26. We default to Tue Nov 24 because it avoids Thanksgiving inbox volume and gives VIPs a full three days. Shorter windows add urgency but reach fewer people before the public launch on Fri Nov 27.
Who counts as a VIP for early access?
Customers with a proven purchase record. We define it as Placed Order at least 3 times, or Historic CLV above your top 10% cutoff. Build it as a Klaviyo segment so it updates on its own. Add SMS subscribers and loyalty members if you offer early access as an opt-in reward.
Can Klaviyo create unique Shopify discount codes for each subscriber?
Yes. Klaviyo generates unique Shopify codes from Content > Coupons and inserts one per recipient through the personalization menu. For campaigns, you must generate at least as many codes as recipients before sending. Flows replenish codes automatically. Dates are set in UTC, and Klaviyo adds a 24-hour buffer to the expiration you enter.
Should early access go out by email or SMS?
Both, to subscribers who consented to each. Email carries the full offer, product row and terms. A short text drives the fastest action and suits a reminder before the public launch. Only text people who opted in to SMS, and send outside quiet hours in their local time zone.
Is a password page a good way to run early access on Shopify?
Usually not. Shopify password protection hides your entire online store, so all non-VIP visitors and ad traffic hit a landing page. It fits a short store-wide private sale. For most brands, Klaviyo unique coupon codes or unlisted products reached by direct link give the same exclusivity without closing the store.
