Good Black Friday email subject lines match the job of each send. A teaser announces a date, a launch states the offer, a last call names a deadline. Below are 60 original subject lines grouped by send, from the Nov 18 teaser to the Dec 4 thank you, with preview text, formulas and rules on length and emoji.
Our rule: put the offer or deadline in the first 30 characters. Everything after that is a bonus.
Then write the preview text. Leave it blank and the inbox shows the first text in your email, often "View in browser".
Should you use emoji in Black Friday subject lines?
This is opinion, not data. We have not found a public study we trust that isolates emoji in BFCM subject lines.
Our view: use at most one, and only if emoji are already part of your brand's voice. One can stand out in a column of text subject lines. Five look like every other sale.
Test rendering in Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook before scheduling. Never replace a word with an emoji, and keep it out of the first 30 characters, where the offer belongs.
Should you personalize Black Friday subject lines with a first name?
Use it on a few sends, not all of them. A first name works best where the email is personal: VIP early access and the thank you. On the launch email it adds little.
In Klaviyo, personalization tags can be used in subject lines, and you should always set a fallback. The tag {{ first_name|default:'friend' }} shows "friend" when the name is missing. Without a fallback, a profile with no name shows a stray comma or an empty space.
Browsed products and VIP status often beat a name: "Cyber Monday pricing on your saved items" or "Your private sale ends Thursday night".
Do spam trigger words in subject lines still matter?
Less than most checklists claim. Mailbox providers like Gmail weigh sender reputation and how recipients react to your mail far more than single words. Gmail and Yahoo both set a maximum spam complaint rate of 0.3% for bulk senders. A word like "free" will not sink you. Complaints will.
Our advice, as advice:
Words like "free", "sale" and "% off" are fine. Every retailer uses them in November.
All caps, repeated punctuation ("!!!") and fake "RE:" or "FWD:" prefixes are a bad idea. They annoy people, and annoyed people click "spam".
Match the subject line to the email. A misleading subject drives complaints faster than any word.
The deliverability work that matters happens before November. Our BFCM email strategy playbook covers warming and segmentation.
How do you write subject lines for all 13 sends at once?
Write them in one sitting, in send order, then read them top to bottom. If two look alike, change the formula on one.
Then decide how many you need. A Lean plan uses 4, Essential uses 6. Our guide on how many Black Friday emails to send matches the plan to your list.
If you are building the emails in Figma, Sorted Studio has the 13 calendar sends built in and writes subject lines and preview text for each one in your brand. Use the lines above as a starting point either way, then edit for your offer.

One that states the job of that send in the first 30 characters. For a launch email that is the offer ("Black Friday is live: 30% off everything"). For a last call it is the deadline ("Ends at midnight ET"). Pair it with preview text that adds a second detail, such as the end date or free shipping.
How many characters should a Black Friday subject line be?
Keep the key message in the first 30 characters. BuzzStream's analysis found Gmail on mobile shows about 37 to 40 characters and Apple Mail on iPhone 48, and that a subject line needs under 33 characters to show in full on every device it tested. Longer lines are fine if the offer comes first.
Should every BFCM email mention Black Friday in the subject line?
No. Use "Black Friday" on the launch and maybe one other send. Repeating it across 13 emails makes them look identical in the inbox. Teasers, gift guides, weekend emails and thank-you emails work better with a product, a benefit or a date than with the event name.
Does the word "free" send Black Friday emails to spam?
Not on its own. Mailbox providers weigh sender reputation and recipient complaints much more heavily than single words. Gmail and Yahoo cap spam complaint rates at 0.3% for bulk senders, so the bigger risk is a misleading or repetitive subject line that makes people click "spam". Use "free" when it is true.
Do emoji increase open rates on Black Friday?
We have not seen a trustworthy public study that isolates emoji for BFCM, so treat it as a brand choice. Our view: one emoji at most, only if your brand already uses them, placed after the offer. Test rendering in Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook before scheduling.
