Holiday gift buyer segmentation means tagging orders that were gifts so they get different emails from self-purchasers. Use 4 signals: ship-to differs from bill-to, a gift note or gift wrap, a gift card purchase, and order timing. Gift buyers need occasion reminders. The recipient, who has never heard from you, is the bigger Q1 opportunity.
The mix is real. A Shopify and Gallup survey reported that 64% of consumers planned to buy something for themselves during BFCM 2023, alongside their gift shopping. Both kinds of order land in the same holiday cohort. Send both groups the same usage tips and replenishment reminders, and half of those emails miss.
This post is part of our repeat purchase rate guide. It covers how to tag gift orders in Shopify, the Klaviyo segments, what to send each group and how to reach recipients.
Why should you separate gift buyers from self-purchasers?
Because their next purchase follows a different clock.
A self-purchaser's next order depends on usage. They bought a 30-day serum, so they need it again in about 30 days. A gift buyer's next order depends on occasions: a birthday, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, next December. Sending them a "running low?" email on day 25 makes no sense. They never opened the product.
The gift recipient is a third person. They used the product, may like it, and are not on your list. If you do nothing, most of them never connect the gift to your store.
Mixing the groups also distorts your numbers. A November cohort heavy in gift buyers will show a lower 60-day repeat rate than October. That can be normal. Split them before you judge your Q1 plan, as we recommend in our post on how to retain Black Friday customers.

The catch is in Klaviyo. A Klaviyo staff answer on its community notes that you can only segment on top-level event properties, while nested data such as addresses can be shown in templates but not segmented. Klaviyo's Shopify data reference does not list shipping address, billing address or order notes among Placed Order properties.
So do the comparison in Shopify, then pass a simple flag to Klaviyo.
How do you tag gift orders with Shopify Flow?
Shopify Flow is a free Shopify app with an Add customer tags action. Its Order created trigger exposes the full Admin API Order object, and Shopify ships templates that check whether an order contains a gift card and that read line item properties.
Build one workflow:
- Trigger: Order created.
- Condition A: shipping address name is not equal to billing address name, or shipping address line 1 is not equal to billing address line 1.
- Condition B: the order note is not empty, or a line item property such as "Gift message" exists, or the order contains your gift wrap product.
- Condition C: any line item is a gift card.
- Action: if A or B is true, add customer tag gift-buyer-2026. If C is true, add gift-card-buyer-2026.
Klaviyo syncs Shopify customer tags into a profile property called Shopify Tags. A Klaviyo employee confirms the sync runs one way, from Shopify to Klaviyo. Segment on Shopify Tags contains gift-buyer-2026.
Expect false positives. Office addresses, college students and second homes all trigger condition A. That is why condition B, the gift note, is the stronger signal. If you do not offer a gift note field at checkout, add one before Thanksgiving. It costs nothing and it is the clearest data you will get.
What Klaviyo segments should you build?
Build 4 segments and check them on Mon Dec 28, 2026:
| Segment |
Definition |
Main use |
| Holiday self-purchasers |
First Placed Order Nov 26 to Dec 24, 2026, Shopify Tags does not contain gift-buyer-2026 or gift-card-buyer-2026 |
Usage and replenishment flows |
| Holiday gift buyers |
Shopify Tags contains gift-buyer-2026 |
Occasion emails, no usage tips |
| Gift card buyers |
Shopify Tags contains gift-card-buyer-2026 |
Redemption reminders |
| Mixed buyers |
Gift tag present and 2+ orders in the period |
Both tracks |
Then exclude gift buyers from usage and replenishment flows with a flow filter: Shopify Tags does not contain gift-buyer-2026. Our replenishment email flow post shows where that filter goes.
Keep the mixed group in both tracks. Someone who bought a candle for themselves and 3 for friends is your best customer. Their self order deserves a reminder and their gift orders tell you they will buy again next December.

What should you send gift buyers after the holidays?
Gift buyers respond to occasions and to recognition. Send them 3 things in Q1:
1. Delivery check, about 7 days after fulfillment. "Did it arrive in time?" with a link to support. This catches problems before they turn into a return. If the gift did not fit, send them to an exchange. Our returns to exchanges guide covers the Shopify setup.
2. A "something for you" email in mid-January. Gift buyers often never tried the product themselves. Show your bestseller for self-use, with a small reason to buy: a sample, points, or free shipping. Subject lines:
- "You gave it. Now try it."
- "The one you bought for your sister, in your size"
- "Your turn: 3 bestsellers under $40"
3. The next occasion. Valentine's Day is the first one. Start on Jan 20 with gift-led emails to this segment, timed to your shipping cutoff. Our Valentine's Day email marketing post has the calendar. After that come Mother's Day and birthdays.
Ask for occasion dates. A post-purchase form asking "Who did you buy for, and when is their birthday?" lets you build a date property flow. Klaviyo checks date-based flows daily, a full day in advance, so a reminder 14 days before the saved date is easy to set up.
Do not send gift buyers usage tips or "running low" reminders.
How do you turn gift card buyers and recipients into customers?
Gift cards are large and they bring new people. NRF expected holiday gift card spending to reach $29.1 billion in 2025, with shoppers planning to buy 3 to 4 cards and spend $171.32 on average. NRF also reported that 43% of shoppers planned to buy at least one gift card.
Recipients tend to spend past the balance. A 2026 TSG and Bank of America survey of 1,002 US consumers found 44% typically spend more than the card's value, and 55% said a gift card would get them to try a new business.
Set it up so you capture the recipient:
- Turn on recipient fields. Shopify lets buyers add a recipient email, name, message and send date on gift card products, in supported themes such as Dawn and the Horizon family. The recipient gets the code by email.
- Treat that email as transactional. The recipient did not sign up for marketing. Do not add them to your list.
- Make redemption the opt-in. Put a signup form on the gift card landing page: "Get a sample with your first order." When they redeem and join, they enter your welcome flow.
- Remind the buyer. In late January, email gift card buyers: "Has your gift been used? Here is how to send a reminder."
Price your bestsellers near common card values. If most cards are $50, a $46 bestseller with a $6 add-on suggestion fits how recipients spend.
How do you reach gift recipients who got a physical product?
You do not have their email, so the package has to do the work.
Insert card. Print a card for gift orders only, triggered by the gift tag or gift wrap. Keep it to 3 lines: what the product is, how to use it, and a QR code.
QR code to a dedicated page. Point it to a page such as /welcome-gift, not your homepage. Offer one thing in exchange for an email: a usage guide, a care video, or a sample with their first order. Use a separate Klaviyo signup form so these profiles get a source tag like gift-recipient-2026.
A recipient welcome flow. These people already own the product. Skip the brand pitch. Send:
| Email |
Timing |
Content |
| 1 |
Immediately |
The guide or video they asked for |
| 2 |
Day 4 |
Common mistakes and how to get the best result |
| 3 |
Day 10 |
What pairs with what they received |
| 4 |
Day 21 |
Their offer, with an end date |
Measure the QR scan count, signup rate and first order rate from this source. If scans are low, the card is unclear or the offer is weak. Test the line above the QR code first.
Gift receipts and exchanges. A recipient who exchanges a size is a recipient who engaged. Ask for their email during the exchange, with consent, and route them into the same flow.
When is gift segmentation not worth the effort?
If gifts are a small share of your holiday orders, keep it simple. Run the Shopify Flow tag for a year and look at the numbers before building separate flows.
Check it fast: export December 2025 orders and count those with a gift note or different ship-to and bill-to names. Our rule of thumb: under about 1 in 10, one exclusion filter on your replenishment flow is enough.
Categories where gifting is low, such as replacement parts, bulk pantry staples or pet food, can skip most of this. Gift-led categories, such as candles, jewelry, coffee sets, grooming kits and kids' products, should build all of it.
And on a small list, do it in-house. One Flow workflow, one tag, one exclusion filter and one insert card take a day. The recipient welcome flow can wait until you see scans come in.
What should you set up before December?
Work backward from the holidays:
- By Nov 20: gift note field at checkout, gift card recipient fields on, Shopify Flow workflow live.
- By Dec 1: insert cards printed, QR landing page and signup form live.
- By Dec 28: segments checked, gift buyers excluded from replenishment flows.
- Mid-January: "something for you" email, gift card reminder email.
- Jan 20: Valentine's Day sends start for gift buyers.
Clean your list in January too, since holiday signups include many one-time gift shoppers. See email list cleaning after Black Friday. And hold the deep discounts: our January sale strategy post covers what to run instead. If you want us to review your gift setup before peak, book a call.
