A Shopify CRO agency costs about $500 to $10,000 for a one-time audit, $2,000 to $15,000 a month for an ongoing testing program, and $2,000 to $55,000 for theme builds, per published 2026 guides. Traffic decides which to buy. Below roughly 20,000 to 30,000 monthly sessions, A/B testing is slow, so an audit plus fixes wins.
Most pricing pages blend these three services into one number. They are different products with different payback. This guide separates them and shows the traffic math behind testing.

The audit ranges barely overlap. A $500 audit is usually a checklist review of key pages. A $10,000 audit usually adds analytics checks, session recordings, customer surveys and a prioritized test plan. Ask for a sample deliverable before you compare prices.
Retainers also carry hidden program costs. The market review above suggests adding 30 to 50% to the retainer for testing tools, research and developer time.
What do you get from a CRO audit?
A ranked list of problems and fixes. No live tests.
A good audit covers:
- Analytics check. Are add to cart, checkout and purchase events firing correctly in GA4 and Shopify?
- Funnel by device. Where mobile and desktop drop off between product page, cart and checkout.
- Qualitative research. Session recordings, heatmaps and a short post-purchase or exit survey.
- Page reviews. Home, collection, product, cart and checkout, judged against what buyers need to decide.
- Speed and bugs. App bloat, broken variants, slow images.
- A ranked fix list. Each item scored by expected impact and effort, with a clear owner.
Audits suit stores of almost any size, because fixes do not need statistical significance. A broken mobile size selector is a bug, not a hypothesis.
Our D2C growth audit guide covers what a full audit should check across site, email and ads. For checkout-specific fixes, see Shopify checkout optimization.
What does a CRO testing program cost each month?
Published retainers run from about $2,000 to $15,000+ a month, and they scale with revenue.
One CRO market review maps typical retainers to store revenue:
| Monthly store revenue |
Typical retainer in that review |
| $250,000 |
$5,000 to $8,500 |
| $500,000 |
$8,000 to $10,000 |
| $1,000,000 |
$10,000 to $15,000 |
| $5,000,000 |
$15,000 to $25,000 |
Lower-priced programs exist. Skai Lama's review of CRO services lists packages from $2,000 to $2,500 a month up to $7,500 to $10,000 at one provider, priced by experiments, reporting and strategy.
Ask what each price buys in tests. Some programs commit to a number, such as 2 to 4 shipped experiments a month. Others sell hours. A retainer that does not state test volume, research cadence and who builds the variants is hard to compare.
Expect a minimum term. The same review notes 6-month minimums are common, with 12 months for enterprise programs. Our retainer vs project guide covers how to negotiate a shorter first commitment.
How much traffic do you need for A/B testing to be valid?
More than most Shopify stores have on a single page. The exact number depends on your conversion rate and the lift you want to detect.
Skai Lama works one example. A store with a 2% conversion rate, looking for a 20% relative lift at 95% significance and 80% power, needs about 21,000 visitors per variation. Kameleoon shows that halving the lift you want to detect needs about four times the traffic. At a 2% baseline and a 5% lift, its example needs almost 310,000 visits per variation.
| Lift you want to detect, at a 2% conversion rate |
Visitors per variation |
Total for a 2-way test |
| 20% |
About 21,000 |
About 42,000 |
| 10% |
About 84,000 (4 times the 20% case) |
About 168,000 |
| 5% |
About 310,000 |
About 620,000 |
Now apply it. A fictional $1.2M a year home goods brand gets 60,000 sessions a month. About half reach a product page, so a product page test sees 30,000 visitors a month. A 20% lift test needs 42,000. That is about 6 weeks for one test, and only if the change is large.
Guides draw the line in slightly different places. One Shopify hiring guide says stores under 20,000 monthly sessions lack the traffic for valid tests, and 30,000+ is enough. The CRO market review says pages under 10,000 monthly visitors take 4 to 8 weeks per test. Both point the same way: low traffic means fewer, bolder tests, or no tests.
Audit, testing program or build: which should you buy?
Match the purchase to your traffic and to what is broken.
| Your situation |
Buy |
Why |
| Under 20,000 sessions a month |
Audit, then fix |
Tests take too long to reach significance |
| 20,000 to 100,000 sessions |
Audit, then a light testing program on high-traffic pages |
Room for 1 to 2 bold tests a month |
| 100,000+ sessions |
Ongoing testing program |
Enough traffic to test smaller changes |
| Theme is slow, broken or hard to edit |
Build or theme customization |
Testing on a broken base wastes traffic |
| Checkout or tracking errors |
Fixes first, then anything else |
Bad data makes every later test unreliable |
The session bands above are our working rule, built from the sources in the previous section. Your conversion rate moves them. A store converting at 4% can test with roughly half the traffic of one at 2%.
A build is a project, not a program. Price it as a fixed scope with a launch date. Theme customization at $2,000 to $8,000 is often enough. A full custom theme makes sense when the current theme blocks the changes your audit found.
What should the first 90 days of a CRO engagement deliver?
Fixes shipped, clean data and a test plan you can read.
| Days |
What should happen |
What good looks like |
| 1 to 30 |
Analytics check, research, audit |
Tracking verified, a ranked list of 20 to 40 issues, surveys live |
| 31 to 60 |
Ship quick fixes, launch first test |
Top 5 to 10 fixes live, first test running on the highest-traffic page |
| 61 to 90 |
Read results, build roadmap |
Test readouts with confidence levels, next quarter's test plan, revenue per session tracked |
Track revenue per session, not just conversion rate. A change that lifts conversion while cutting average order value can lose money.
Be wary of guaranteed lifts in a proposal. Results depend on traffic, product and price, and nobody controls those in month one. Our agency red flags guide covers this and other warning signs.
Agency, freelancer or in-house CRO?
Each option fits a different stage.
One CRO review estimates a mid-market agency at $96,000 to $138,000 a year, against $420,000 to $650,000 for a four-person in-house team. Our agency vs in-house guide covers the trade-offs beyond cost.
When should you not hire a CRO agency?
When traffic or revenue is too low for the fee to pay back.
Sources disagree on the threshold. One Shopify hiring guide says CRO ROI starts to work above $50,000 a month in revenue. One CRO market review says agency engagements are not recommended below $250,000 a month. The gap reflects the price: an audit pays back much sooner than a $10,000 monthly program.
Our view: under about $20,000 a month in revenue, fix the basics yourself. Our free store grader flags the biggest gaps for smaller stores. Between $20,000 and $150,000 a month, buy an audit and ship the fixes. Consider ongoing testing once traffic clears the table above.
