Shopify Email, now called Shopify Messaging, can handle BFCM for a small list running 4 sends with basic segments. Klaviyo is worth it once you need VIP early access with unique codes, predictive segments, SMS beyond cart recovery, or a 6 to 13 send calendar. The deciding factor is segment logic, not email volume.
Below is a side-by-side comparison with sources, a cost example for peak week and a plain verdict. For the full Klaviyo build, see our Klaviyo Black Friday setup guide for 2026.
What is Shopify Email called now?
Shopify Messaging. The app listing on the Shopify App Store is titled Shopify Messaging and covers email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns from inside the Shopify admin. Shopify announced on Dec 10, 2025 that Shopify Messaging now supports SMS marketing in select regions.
Many merchants still search for "Shopify Email," and Shopify's help center URLs still use that path. They refer to the same product. In this post, "Shopify Messaging" means the app formerly called Shopify Email.
The comparison matters more in 2026 because Shopify Messaging now does SMS. A year ago, a brand wanting text on Black Friday needed a second app. Now the question is whether the native tool covers enough of your BFCM plan.
How do Klaviyo and Shopify Messaging compare feature by feature?
| Feature | Shopify Messaging | Klaviyo |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing basis | Per email sent (Shopify) | Active profiles plus email volume (Klaviyo) |
| Free allowance | 10,000 emails per month | Up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends per month (Klaviyo) |
| Email overage | $1 per 1,000 up to 300,000; $0.65 per 1,000 from 300,000 to 750,000; $0.55 per 1,000 above 750,000 | Flex to next tier, upgrade, or stop sending |
| SMS price (US) | $0.012 per message, plus $2.15 per month per toll-free number (Shopify) | Dollar-based rate per message, per recipient, per segment (Klaviyo) |
| SMS in automations | Abandoned checkout, cart and product browse only (Shopify) | Available in flows, with quiet hours handling (Klaviyo) |
| Automations | 11 templates, custom logic through Shopify Flow | Flows triggered by list, segment, metric, date property or price drop (Klaviyo) |
| Segmentation | Shopify customer segments, including predicted spend tier (Shopify) | Dynamic segments on profile and event data |
| Predictive analytics | Predicted spend tier | Predicted CLV, churn risk, expected date of next order (Klaviyo) |
| Unique coupon codes | Not covered in the docs we reviewed | Unique Shopify codes per recipient (Klaviyo) |
| Reporting | Click-through and conversion rates (Shopify App Store) | Built-in reporting; Marketing Analytics add-on from $100 per month for up to 13,500 active profiles (Klaviyo) |
Two rows decide most BFCM plans: segmentation and SMS in automations. The rest is cost.
How much does Shopify Messaging cost for Black Friday week?
Less than most brands expect for email. Shopify gives every store 10,000 free emails at the start of each month. Unused emails do not carry over. Abandoned checkout automations are always free and do not count toward the limit.
A worked example for a fictional $3M skincare brand:
| Line item | Volume | Rate | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email: 10 BFCM sends to 20,000 subscribers | 200,000 emails | First 10,000 free, then $1 per 1,000 | $190 |
| SMS: 4 texts to 3,000 SMS subscribers | 12,000 messages | $0.012 per message | $144 |
| Toll-free number | 1 | $2.15 per month | $2.15 |
| Total for the month | $336.15 |
That excludes your regular November sends, which share the same 10,000 free emails.
Klaviyo does not publish a single number you can drop into this table. Its paid plans scale with active profiles and email volume. Klaviyo counts any emailable profile as active, regardless of consent status. Use the calculator on Klaviyo's pricing page with your real profile count. Suppress profiles you no longer market to before you check, since suppressed profiles stop counting.
Where does Shopify Messaging fall short for BFCM?
Three places, all tied to the BFCM calendar we use across this series.
VIP early access. Our calendar opens with VIP early access on Tue Nov 24. That send works best with one unique code per recipient so the offer cannot leak. Klaviyo generates those codes from Content > Coupons. We did not find equivalent per-recipient code generation in Shopify Messaging's documentation.
SMS beyond cart recovery. Shopify's SMS automations cover abandoned checkout, cart and product browse. Campaign SMS is available, but SMS is not listed for welcome, post-purchase or winback automations. Klaviyo supports SMS inside flows, with quiet hours handled per recipient.
Segment depth. BFCM targeting relies on segments like VIPs, engaged 90-day non-buyers and recent purchasers to suppress. Our Klaviyo BFCM segments post lists the full set. Shopify segments cover order and spend data well. Klaviyo adds on-site behavior, email engagement and predictive fields like expected date of next order.
How do the two handle SMS compliance during peak week?
Both platforms send SMS in the US. The compliance controls you can see differ. Shopify's SMS announcement says every message includes built-in safeguards to meet regional compliance. Shopify's public docs give fewer details on how those safeguards work.
Klaviyo documents its controls in detail. Quiet hours apply by the recipient's area code for US numbers by default, and you can switch to eastern time. In campaigns, you choose whether a text that hits quiet hours is delayed or skipped. Smart Sending runs on separate windows for email and SMS.
For BFCM, that control matters on evening sends. A Cyber Monday last call that lands after a state's cutoff becomes a compliance problem. Our email and SMS for BFCM post covers the full setup.
Where does Klaviyo cost you more than it gives back?
On small lists running few sends. If you have a few thousand subscribers and plan the Lean calendar (4 sends: Black Friday morning and evening, Cyber Monday morning and evening), Klaviyo's segmentation depth goes mostly unused.
Predictive analytics is a good test. Klaviyo requires all of these before the feature turns on, per its predictive analytics guide:
- At least 500 customers with non-cancelled, non-refunded, non-zero orders
- At least 180 days of order history, with orders in the last 30 days
- Some customers with 3 or more orders
A brand below those thresholds pays for features it cannot switch on yet.
Setup time also counts. Switching platforms in October means rebuilding flows, forms and segments while the BFCM calendar is already due. We recommend against a full migration after mid October. If you plan to move, run BFCM on what you have and migrate in January. Our deliverability guide for BFCM explains why a new sending setup and peak volume should not overlap.
Which one should you use for BFCM 2026?
Use the table below as the decision rule.
| Your situation | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under 500 customers with orders, Lean plan (4 sends) | Shopify Messaging | Free tier covers much of the volume; segments are enough |
| Running the Essential plan (6 sends) with VIP early access | Klaviyo | Unique codes and VIP segments |
| Running the full 13-send calendar | Klaviyo | Engagement-based segments and suppression logic |
| SMS in welcome, post-purchase or winback flows | Klaviyo | Shopify SMS automations cover abandonment only |
| Already on Klaviyo, thinking of switching to save cost | Stay until January | No migrations during peak prep |
| Agency managing many client stores | Klaviyo | One flow and segment structure reused across accounts |
The underlying question: does your BFCM plan treat customers differently? If every subscriber gets the same email, Shopify Messaging is enough. If VIPs, recent buyers and lapsed customers each need different handling, Klaviyo pays for itself in control.
Klaviyo's own BFCM 2025 numbers show where the market went. Email and text drove 42% of revenue for Klaviyo brands, and repeat-customer revenue grew 13.5% year over year. Both numbers point to returning customers, and returning customers are where segment logic does its work.
How do agencies handle this choice across clients?
Agencies rarely get to choose. Clients arrive on whatever platform they already pay for. The practical move is a single BFCM calendar that runs on either tool, with the Klaviyo version adding the VIP and SMS layers.
For agencies running BFCM at scale, the bottleneck is build capacity, not platform choice. Every client wants the same two weeks. Our team sent 40M+ emails in BFCM week 2025, and white-label delivery for agencies is a core part of that work.
