Klaviyo Black Friday Deliverability: The Pre-Send Checklist
Authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC on a branded sending domain, keep spam complaints under 0.1%, ramp volume to engaged segments from Nov 9, and watch Klaviyo's deliverability hub daily.

Klaviyo deliverability for Black Friday comes down to five checks: SPF, DKIM and DMARC on a branded sending domain, one-click unsubscribe, a spam complaint rate under 0.1%, a volume ramp to engaged segments starting about two weeks out, and daily monitoring in Klaviyo's deliverability hub. Finish authentication by Oct 31. Start the ramp around Nov 9.
BFCM week is when inbox providers see the most volume and the most complaints. Klaviyo brands sent more than 22.7B messages over BFCM 2025, up 25% YoY. Your emails compete for inbox placement with all of it. Our team sent 40M+ emails in BFCM week 2025. This is the checklist we run before that week. This checklist is part of our Klaviyo Black Friday setup guide.
What are the Gmail and Yahoo sender requirements for BFCM 2026?
Both providers enforce bulk sender rules. Gmail defines a bulk sender as anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts. On Black Friday, most D2C brands with a list above 10,000 cross that line.
Gmail calculates spam rate daily. That means one bad Friday shows up immediately. It also means a clean October does not protect you if Black Friday's complaint rate spikes.
Klaviyo covers part of this for you. Its unsubscribe documentation states that Klaviyo "automatically adds code to the header of every email you send to enable one-click unsubscribes." You still need a visible unsubscribe link in every template.
Do you need a dedicated sending domain in Klaviyo?
Yes. Without one, your emails send from Klaviyo's shared domain and show "via klaviyomail.com" next to your name. You also share reputation with every other sender on that domain.
Klaviyo calls this a branded sending domain. Per its setup article:
Set it up under company settings, then Domains, then Add Domain. You need Owner, Admin, Manager or Campaign Coordinator access.
Use a subdomain. Klaviyo says the most common choice is "send", so send.yourbrand.com.
Klaviyo generates the DNS records: 3 CNAME records plus 1 TXT record for static routing, or 4 NS records plus 1 TXT for dynamic routing.
Add DMARC at the root domain. Klaviyo can generate v=DMARC1; p=none;, which meets Gmail and Yahoo minimums.
Timing matters. Klaviyo says new accounts on newly registered domains need 2 to 4 weeks of warming. If you set up a brand new domain after Nov 1, you are warming it during BFCM week. Existing senders moving to a branded domain on a 30+ day old domain with send history do not need to warm again.
Deadline: domain live and verified by Oct 31, 2026.
How do you ramp sending volume before Black Friday?
Inbox providers trust consistent patterns. A brand that sends 20,000 emails a week and then 300,000 on Black Friday looks like a compromised account.
How should you clean your Klaviyo list before BFCM?
Cleaning comes before the ramp. Do it in October.
Run a sunset flow. Target profiles with zero clicks, zero real opens and zero orders in 180 days. Send 1 or 2 re-permission emails. Suppress anyone who does not engage. The win-back flow guide covers the build.
Filter Apple machine opens. Use "Opened Email where Apple Privacy Open equals False" in every engagement condition. Klaviyo's MPP article explains why raw opens overcount.
Check imports. Any list uploaded without clear consent goes nowhere near a BFCM send.
Review bounces. Klaviyo rates a bounce rate under 1.0% as healthy and over 2% as needing attention, per its deliverability performance article. A high bounce rate on an old segment means that segment stays out.
Audit popups. Check that every sign-up form writes to the right list and has double opt-in set the way you intend.
Do not suppress a large block of profiles on Nov 25. Sudden drops look as odd as sudden spikes. Finish by Nov 6.
What should you avoid changing in November?
Inbox providers judge you on patterns. November is the wrong month to change the pattern.
Freeze these after Nov 1:
Sending domain. No new subdomain, no switch between shared and branded sending.
From address. Keep the same address, such as hello@send.yourbrand.com. Your subscribers know it, and their filters do too.
From name. Test a founder name in October if you want one. Do not debut it on Black Friday.
Link domains. Use the same store domain in every link. Avoid new URL shorteners or third-party tracking domains.
Email platform. If you are migrating to Klaviyo from another ESP, finish by early October or wait until January.
One exception: if authentication is failing, fix it immediately. A broken DKIM record costs more than a change in pattern.
How do you monitor deliverability in Klaviyo during BFCM week?
Klaviyo has a deliverability hub under Analytics, then the Deliverability tab. It gives you a deliverability score from 0 to 100, built from open, click, bounce, unsubscribe and spam complaint rates over the last 30 days. You need at least 1,000 emails sent in 30 days for a score.
Each campaign's deliverability tab, 2 to 4 hours after send. Compare spam complaints and bounces against the previous BFCM send.
Google Postmaster Tools for your sending domain. Gmail's spam rate is the number that decides Gmail placement, and Klaviyo cannot see Gmail's internal data.
Set up Postmaster Tools in October so you have a baseline before the ramp starts.
What should you do if opens, clicks or inbox placement drop mid-week?
Act the same day. Every extra send to the wrong audience makes the next one worse.
Step 1: confirm it is real. Compare click rate, not open rate, against the same send type last week. Check whether the drop is concentrated on one provider. A Gmail-only drop with steady Yahoo and Outlook numbers points at Gmail reputation.
Step 2: shrink the audience. Move the next send to Engaged 30 and VIPs only. Cancel or narrow any optional sends: in the 13-send calendar, sends 2, 6, 7, 10 and 12 are optional. Keep the lean four (4, 5, 8, 9).
Step 3: remove the cause. Look at what changed. Common causes: a new segment added to the audience, a spike in send volume, a subject line that drew complaints, or a broken link domain.
Step 4: rebuild slowly. Once complaint rates return to the healthy band, widen again by about 50% per send. Do not jump back to the full list for Cyber Monday.
Step 5: keep SMS and flows running. Transactional and flow messages to recent buyers still drive revenue while campaigns recover. Our SMS and email BFCM post covers splitting urgency sends across channels.

Want BFCM built for you?
We set up the segments, flows and every send in your Klaviyo. From $599, live in 7 to 14 days.
What spam complaint rate is too high for Black Friday?
Gmail tells senders to stay below 0.1% and never reach 0.3%. Yahoo sets the ceiling at 0.3%. Klaviyo's own bands are stricter: under 0.01% is healthy and over 0.05% needs attention. Use Klaviyo's bands as your early warning. If one send passes 0.05%, narrow the next send to Engaged 30.
Does Klaviyo add one-click unsubscribe automatically?
Yes. Klaviyo states that it automatically adds code to the header of every email to enable one-click unsubscribe for supported inboxes. That covers the Gmail and Yahoo header requirement. Gmail also requires a clearly visible unsubscribe link in the message body, so keep the unsubscribe tag in every template footer.
Is it too late to set up a branded sending domain in November?
For an existing sender on an established domain, no. Klaviyo says senders moving to a branded domain that is 30+ days old with send history do not need to warm again. A newly registered domain needs 2 to 4 weeks of warming, so a new domain set up in November will still be warming during BFCM week.
How fast can I increase email volume before BFCM?
Klaviyo's guidance is about 50% per send. Start with your most engaged segment about two weeks before BFCM, add profiles until each send is 1.5x the last, and stop just under your active emailable profiles. Pull back to engaged profiles a few days before the main send.
Where is the deliverability score in Klaviyo?
Go to Analytics, then the Deliverability tab. The deliverability hub shows a score from 0 to 100 based on opens, clicks, bounces, unsubscribes and spam complaints over 30 days. You need at least 1,000 emails sent in the last 30 days. Scores of 75 to 89 are Good and 90 to 100 are Excellent.
