Google AI Mode shopping answers come from two places: the Shopping Graph, which your Merchant Center feed supplies, and indexed web pages. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear beyond normal Search eligibility. For a Shopify store, that means a clean Google & YouTube app feed, complete product attributes, and product pages Google can crawl and read.
That is good news. It means the work is known. This guide covers what Google documents as of October 2026, the feed fixes that matter most, and how agentic checkout and the new conversational attributes fit in. It is part of our guide to AI search optimization for Shopify.
AI Mode is the conversational tab in Google Search. Google said at I/O 2026 that it has over a billion monthly users.
For product queries, AI Mode shows a visual panel of listings that updates as the shopper refines the question. It can build comparison tables, pull price, review and inventory details, and track prices. Google described these features at I/O 2025 and expanded them in November 2025.
AI Overviews are different. They are the short AI summary at the top of a normal results page, and they only appear when Google decides they add value. Both draw on the same index and product data. Google's AI features documentation says they "may use different models and techniques," so their links can differ.
The same shopping features run in the Gemini app for US users.
Google names its sources. This table maps each one to the Shopify setting behind it.

The Shopping Graph is large. Google puts it at more than 50 billion product listings, with about 2 billion refreshed every hour, in its November 2025 post.
Shopify confirms the route. Its agentic storefronts page says Google AI Mode and Gemini get products through the Google & YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Center. Shopify Catalog, which feeds ChatGPT, is not the Google route. Our ChatGPT shopping guide covers that path.
What does Google say you need to appear in AI Mode?
Less than most "AI SEO" pitches claim. Google's AI features page says:
- A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
- "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode."
- You do not need special schema, AI text files or new machine-readable files.
- Structured data should match the visible text on the page.
- Merchant Center and Business Profile data should be kept current.
Google also explains query fan-out. AI Mode runs several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then assembles the answer. A question about "running shoes for flat feet under $120" can fan out into searches on arch support, cushioning, sizing and price. Each one is a chance for a product page that answers it.
That is the case for detailed product copy. A page that states arch type, drop, weight and width can match several fan-out searches. A page that says "engineered for performance" matches none. Our guide to product descriptions for AI search shows how to write them.
How do I fix my Google & YouTube app feed?
Start in the app's Products tab. Google's Shopify sync guide lists four statuses: Not approved, Limited, Under review and Approved. Work through every product that is not Approved.
The most common fixes:
- Product identifiers. Add a GTIN in variant details if the product has one. If not, add an MPN and brand. For your own products with no GTIN, check This is a custom product. Google warns wrong identifiers can block products and risk account suspension.
- Apparel attributes. Clothing and shoes need age group, gender, color and size for free listings.
- Category. Set a product category on every item.
- Titles and descriptions. The app can send your SEO title and meta description instead of the product title and description. Use that only if those fields are better written.
- Variants. Fix them in the Variants section so each size and color syncs as its own item.
Recheck weekly. Google says its errors can differ from what Shopify shows. Then open Diagnostics in Merchant Center for policy issues. For deeper feed work, see our Google Shopping optimization guide.
Are free listings turned on for my store?
Check, because free listings are the organic entry to Google's shopping surfaces. Google's free listings help page says they can show on the Shopping tab, Search, Images, Lens and YouTube, and lists Gemini among the surfaces. Inclusion is not guaranteed.
To check: in Merchant Center, go to Marketing > Marketing methods and find the Free listings card. New accounts usually have it on by default.
Free listings have their own requirements:
- A return policy, ideally set in Merchant Center
- Shipping settings or a shipping attribute, mandatory in the US
- Required attributes: id, title, link, image link, price, description, availability
- Brand and GTIN or MPN where they apply
- Product data that matches your store
Shipping and returns are the gaps we see most on Shopify stores. Merchants set them in Shopify but never confirm Merchant Center picked them up. Open Settings > Shipping and returns in Merchant Center and confirm both are present.
For the paid side of the same surfaces, our Google Shopping guide for D2C covers campaign structure.
What are Merchant Center conversational attributes?
They are newer optional fields built for question-style shopping. Google introduced them at Google Marketing Live in May 2026, per Search Engine Land. It reported Google's AI systems use them to match products to conversational queries across AI Mode and Gemini.
Google's product data specification now lists these optional attributes:
question_and_answer: product FAQs as question and answer pairs
product_highlight and product_detail: key benefits and specs
related_product: links between items in your catalog
document_link: a PDF such as a manual or spec sheet
item_group_title: a shared title for a variant family
popularity_rank: a 0 to 100 score you assign
The Shopify sync guide does not list these among the fields the app sends. In practice, add them through a supplemental data source in Merchant Center or a feed app. Start with question_and_answer on your top 20 products, using the real questions your support team answers.
Does product structured data still matter for AI Mode?
Yes. Google's product structured data docs say using both a Merchant Center feed and on-page markup "maximizes" eligibility and helps Google verify your data. Google may combine them. For example, it can use feed pricing when a page lacks it.
For stores where shoppers buy on the page, Google's merchant listing docs require name, image and an Offer. They recommend brand, description, GTIN, aggregateRating, review, shipping details and return policy.
Most Shopify themes output basic Product markup. Many miss shipping and return policy, and some review apps add a second, conflicting Product block. Run your top product URLs through the Rich Results Test and fix critical errors first.
Our Shopify product schema guide walks through each property and how to fix common theme gaps without a developer.
Can Google AI Mode check out for my shoppers?
In some cases, and it is still rolling out. In November 2025, Google launched agentic checkout in Search and AI Mode for eligible US merchants, including "select Shopify merchants." A shopper sets a price target. When the price drops, Google can buy with Google Pay after the shopper confirms.
In January 2026, Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair and Target, according to 9to5Google. It powers a "Buy" button on eligible listings from US retailers in AI Mode and Gemini. The retailer stays the seller of record.
Shopify says its stores are UCP-enabled by default. In admin, Sales channels > Agentic includes a Direct checkout setting. If you turn it off, shoppers are sent to your store to buy.
Google's own help page for UCP checkout says it applies to US products and participating merchants, per Search Engine Roundtable. Availability varies by store, so check your admin.
How do I measure Google AI Mode traffic?
Partly. Google's AI features page says AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks count in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type. Since August 31, 2026, Search Console also has a Generative AI performance report for all sites. It shows impressions only, by page, device and country.
Three practical views:
- Search Console. Use the Generative AI report for impressions. In the main Performance report, watch long, question-style queries, where fan-out searches often show up.
- Shopify agentic analytics. Sales channels > Agentic reports sales, orders and sessions by AI channel where available.
- GA4. GA4 now has an "AI Assistant" default channel for chatbot referrers such as Gemini. AI Mode clicks come from Google Search, so expect them under Organic Search.
Merchant Center has announced AI performance insights. They will show share of voice across AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini, plus an attribute completeness score. The page dated May 27, 2026 still says "coming soon."
Our guide to tracking AI search traffic in GA4 covers channel groups step by step.
Where should a Shopify brand start?
Do the documented work first. Clear every disapproved product in the Google & YouTube app. Add identifiers. Confirm free listings, shipping and returns in Merchant Center. Validate product markup on your top sellers.
Then improve the content AI Mode reads. Rewrite your top 20 product descriptions with specs and use cases. Add question_and_answer data for those same products. Keep pages fast and text-based, since Google reads text more reliably than images. Our Shopify page speed guide helps there.
