To get products in ChatGPT shopping as a Shopify store, you mostly need to be eligible for Shopify Catalog. OpenAI says Shopify product data is already integrated and "no additional work is required." The channel is on by default for stores selling to US customers. Shoppers then check out on your own store, not inside ChatGPT.
Being eligible is the floor. Whether ChatGPT picks your product depends on relevance, price, reviews and data quality. This guide covers what OpenAI and Shopify document as of October 2026, and where the line sits between what you control and what you do not. It is part of our wider guide to AI search optimization for Shopify.
ChatGPT shows product carousels when a question signals shopping intent. OpenAI's help page says products are picked for relevance to the query and the user's context, such as Memory and custom instructions. Price and reviews can factor in.
A shopper taps a product and sees details, a review summary and a list of merchants. They can compare options side by side. OpenAI's March 24, 2026 update added visual browsing, image search and side-by-side comparison for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users.
The buy button sends the shopper to the merchant. Shopify's ChatGPT setup page says checkout opens in an in-app browser on the ChatGPT app, or a new tab on the web. Your checkout, branding, discounts and payment methods all apply.
Shopify charges no ChatGPT-specific fees. You pay normal payment processing.
Shopify sets the rules, not OpenAI. Here is the checklist from Shopify's ChatGPT page and Catalog requirements:

Shopify reviews eligibility over time. A store can become eligible later or lose eligibility if it slips. Sales channels > Agentic shows how many products are in Catalog and why a store might be ineligible.
How do Shopify products get into ChatGPT?
Through Shopify Catalog. Shopify describes Catalog as a structured source of product data from eligible stores: titles, descriptions, images, prices, options and availability. AI platforms use it to search for and understand products.
Eligible products are added automatically. You cannot opt out of Catalog itself, because it also powers storefront search and the Shop app. You can stop individual channels, including ChatGPT, from reading it.
Catalog also lets you map custom product data and set how variants group into listings. That matters if you store specs in metafields or sell one product as several separate listings.
ChatGPT can also find your products the old way: by crawling. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says any public site can appear in ChatGPT search if OAI-SearchBot is not blocked. If you or an app edited robots.txt.liquid, check that it does not block OAI-SearchBot. Our llms.txt for Shopify guide lists each AI crawler and what it does.
What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
It was scaled back. Instant Checkout let shoppers pay inside ChatGPT. It launched in September 2025, according to Storyboard18's report on the change.
On March 24, 2026, OpenAI wrote that the first version was not as flexible as it wanted. Merchants can now use their own checkout, and OpenAI is focusing on product discovery. Retailers that want a deeper experience can build a ChatGPT app.
For Shopify stores, the result is simple. Shopify's page says ChatGPT sends buyers to your online store checkout, and there is no ChatGPT direct checkout toggle in admin.
One caveat. OpenAI's shopping help page still mentions an "Instant checkout" label for some eligible products and merchants. The Agentic Commerce Protocol behind it is still live. Treat in-chat checkout as something that may return in a different form, and plan around referral traffic for now.
How does ChatGPT decide which products and merchants to show?
OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula. Its help page names the inputs and factors.
For which products appear:
- Relevance to the query and the user's context
- Price, reviews and ease of use, depending on the question
- Structured metadata from first- and third-party providers
- OpenAI's safety standards and product policies
For which merchants are listed for a product:
- Availability
- Price
- Quality
- Whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller
Two details matter for D2C brands. First, ChatGPT tries to surface the lowest price it knows of and may show a "Best price" label. Second, review summaries are generated from public reviews, and OpenAI does not verify them.
Product results are "not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships." Ads are a separate product.
If you are the maker and sell direct, that is a stated merchant ranking factor in your favor. Make it obvious on the page: brand name in the title, "official store" language where true, and consistent pricing across retailers.
What can a Shopify merchant control?
More than most people assume. Here is what moves the inputs OpenAI and Shopify document.
Product data. Shopify's agentic storefronts page lists what its listing quality check considers: description length, image count, verified reviews, variant completeness and policy completeness. Fill all five.
Descriptions that answer questions. ChatGPT matches products to detailed requests like "waterproof hiking boots for wide feet under $150." Copy that states width, waterproofing and price gets matched. Copy that says "built for adventure" does not. Our guide to product descriptions for AI search has before and after examples.
Legal text placement. Shopify says required legal disclosures must sit within the first 6,000 characters of a product description.
Reviews. OpenAI builds summaries from public reviews. Volume and recency on your site and elsewhere feed that. See our Shopify review strategy guide.
Structured data. Clean Product and Offer markup helps any system reading your pages. Our Shopify product schema guide covers the gaps most themes have.
What can't you control?
Be clear-eyed about this part.
- Ranking. There is no bid, no partner tier and no setting that raises organic placement.
- The wording. Shopify says each channel decides how to rank, word and display your products. Labels like "Budget-friendly" are generated by ChatGPT.
- Review summaries. They are model-generated from public reviews. One viral complaint thread can shape them.
- Personalization. Two shoppers asking the same question can see different products, because Memory and past chats count.
- Price comparisons. If a retailer sells your product cheaper, ChatGPT may surface them first.
- Sync timing. OpenAI notes price and shipping updates may lag.
This is why no one can honestly promise "rank #1 in ChatGPT." Any vendor who does is guessing. Our post on how AI chooses which brands to recommend covers the off-site signals you can influence over time.
How do I opt out or hide specific products?
Shopify's ChatGPT page gives the path:
- Go to Sales channels > Agentic.
- Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
- Click ChatGPT.
- Turn off Shopify Catalog access.
- Click Save.
Data can take up to 7 days to stop flowing. Products may still appear through web crawling. Opting out does not affect the Shop app.
To hide individual products from every AI channel, Shopify points to Unlisted status or the seo.hidden metafield. Both also remove the product from search engines, so use them only for items you truly want hidden.
Most D2C brands should stay in. A common reason to opt out is a reseller catalog where you are rarely the cheapest seller.
How do I know if ChatGPT is sending sales?
Start in Shopify. Sales channels > Agentic reports sales, orders, sessions and conversion rate for ChatGPT and each other AI channel. It is not available for headless stores.
Then check GA4. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. GA4 also groups recognized chatbot referrers in its "AI Assistant" default channel. Our guide to tracking ChatGPT traffic in GA4 has the steps.
Expect the numbers to understate impact. Many shoppers research in ChatGPT, then search your brand on Google or type your URL. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" to your post-purchase survey to catch that. Our D2C attribution guide explains how to weigh survey data against click data.
For scale: Adobe found AI-referred traffic to US retail sites up 393% year over year in Q1 2026, from a small base.
What should I do this week?
Five steps, about 2 hours for most stores:
- Open Sales channels > Agentic and note your Catalog product count.
- Complete all three policies in Settings > Policies.
- List products that fail Catalog requirements: no image, $0 price, uncategorized, Unlisted.
- Rewrite your top 5 product descriptions to state who the product is for, key specs and sizing.
- Add
utm_source=chatgpt.com tracking to your weekly report.
Then track monthly. ChatGPT checkout has changed twice since September 2025, so recheck the OpenAI help page and Shopify's settings each quarter. If you want our team to review your catalog and feed, book a call.
