Shopify Review Stars Not Showing in Google:
Why 81% of Product Pages Miss Them and How to Fix Yours

81% of the Shopify product pages we scanned gave Google no star rating. Of stores running a reviews app, 57% still did not. Here is why and how to fix it.

Sorted Agency·October 22, 2026·8 min read

Of the 128 US Shopify product pages we scanned, 81% gave Google no star rating in their structured data. Only 24 of 128 (19%) did. Missing reviews do not explain it. Of the 51 stores running a reviews app, 57% still sent no rating. The usual cause is a setting or a theme conflict, and both are fixable.

This post is part of our Shopify store benchmarks for 2026. It covers what we found, why stars go missing, how to check your store, and the fix for each common reviews app.

How many Shopify product pages give Google a star rating?

We loaded each product page once in headless Chrome and read the structured data (JSON-LD) on the rendered page. We looked for a schema.org Product block and for an AggregateRating inside it.

Finding Number
Product structured data (schema.org Product) present 98 of 128 (77%); 23% none
Star rating in structured data (AggregateRating) 24 of 128 (19%); 81% none
Stores running a reviews app 51 of 128
Of those 51, rating in structured data 22 of 51 (43%); 57% run a reviews app but give Google no rating

Reviews apps we detected: Judge.me, Yotpo, Okendo, Loox, Stamped, Shopify Product Reviews, Trustpilot, Fera and Rivo. On homepages, Judge.me loaded on 23% of the 226 stores and Yotpo on 5%.

The 57% is the number to act on. Those stores already pay for, or at least run, a reviews app. The widget shows stars to shoppers. Google gets nothing.

Why do review stars matter on a product page?

Shoppers lean on reviews. In Baymard Institute's usability testing, 95% of users relied on reviews to evaluate a product or learn more about it.

Google lists Product as a supported type for review snippets. Its product structured data guide pitches ratings as a way to "enhance the appearance of your search result." A rating in your markup is also a clean, machine-readable fact that search and AI systems can read. Our product schema guide and AI search guide cover that side.

One caveat. Google says it "does not guarantee that features that consume structured data will show up in search results." Valid markup makes a page eligible. It does not force stars to appear.

Why are review stars not showing in Google for Shopify stores?

These are the common causes, drawn from Google's rules and the apps' own help docs.

1. The app's rich snippet setting is off, or limited. Most apps turn snippets on by default, but older installs and legacy widgets differ. Judge.me's help article notes that stores on its legacy widget "will only include the aggregate rating" in JSON-LD, not individual reviews.

2. The theme and the app output two separate Products. Your theme prints a Product block. The app prints its own rating block. If they are not joined, Google sees a rating with no product, or two competing products. Judge.me lists "Missing field itemReviewed" and "Missing field aggregateRating" as the symptoms. Stamped's Shopify guide warns that a duplicate creates "two competing product entities."

3. JSON-LD and microdata are mixed. Older themes use microdata. Newer ones use JSON-LD. Judge.me says to match the format your theme uses and turn off the other.

4. An SEO app also outputs ratings. Two sources of aggregateRating on one page is a common conflict. Yotpo's rich snippets doc says multiple aggregateRating properties stop stars from showing. Loox's help article says to disable Loox SEO if you use Yoast SEO, "to avoid conflicts between the codes."

5. The product has no reviews. Yotpo states: "The product must have at least one review for aggregate rating data to be available." Some of the 57% in our sample may simply have checked products with zero reviews. Our scan cannot tell those apart.

6. The rating is not visible on the page. Google's review snippet rules say: "If you use AggregateRating, users should be able to see that aggregate rating on the page." A rating hidden in a closed tab or loaded only for bots breaks that rule.

7. You marked up the wrong page. Google treats reviews of your own business as self-serving. Pages using LocalBusiness or Organization markup for reviews the business controls are ineligible for stars. Judge.me adds that Google does not accept review snippets on the homepage, an all-reviews page or collection pages. Stars come from product pages.

8. Google has not recrawled yet. Judge.me and Loox both say ratings can take up to 30 days to appear. Yotpo says to expect about 24 hours for indexing.

How do you check whether Google sees your ratings?

Pick one product that has published reviews. Then:

  1. Paste its URL into Google's Rich Results Test.
  2. Look for "Product snippets" and "Merchant listings" in the detected items.
  3. Open each and look for an aggregateRating with ratingValue and reviewCount or ratingCount. Google requires at least one of the two counts.
  4. Check for errors such as "Missing field itemReviewed." Check that only one Product item is detected.
  5. In Google Search Console, open the Product snippets and Merchant listings reports. Look for invalid items across all products.
  6. As a quick manual check, view the page source and search for aggregateRating. Zero matches on a reviewed product means Google gets no rating. Two or more means a likely duplicate.

You can also run the same checks on your store with our free grader.

How do you fix it in each reviews app?

Always test on a duplicate theme, then rerun the Rich Results Test before publishing. The table reflects each app's own help docs as of October 2026.

App Where the setting lives Common fix
Judge.me Settings > Google, SEO and AI > SEO Rich Snippets. On by default on the Free plan. If the theme uses JSON-LD, choose JSON-LD and turn off microdata. If aggregateRating is missing, add an @id with the product URL plus #product to the theme's Product block. If an SEO app outputs ratings, turn both Judge.me options off.
Okendo Reviews > Settings > Widget > "Include SEO Rich Snippets." On by default for new customers. If your theme already has Product JSON-LD, add Okendo's aggregateRating block into that file instead of a second snippet. Common file names are json-ld.liquid and microdata.liquid.
Yotpo Automatic markup, on by default for plans with rich snippets. Metafields Sync under Program Settings > Shopify Metafields Sync. Remove extra aggregateRating outputs. Do not wrap product pages in an Organization itemscope. Confirm the reviewed product has at least one review.
Loox Collect Reviews > Preferences > General > SEO > "Show product ratings in Google search results." If the code is not in your theme, activate the Loox Core Script. Turn off Loox SEO if Yoast SEO is installed.
Stamped Manual: paste Stamped's JSON-LD fragment inside the theme's existing Product block, after offers. Enable Shopify metafield sync so review count and average populate. Check for an existing aggregateRating before adding.

For Trustpilot, Fera, Rivo and the legacy Shopify Product Reviews app, we did not verify docs for this post. Ask their support one question: "Does your JSON-LD join my theme's Product block, or output its own?" The answer tells you which of the fixes above applies.

If you use Dawn or Horizon, the theme prints its own Product JSON-LD, and the app's rating has to join that block rather than sit beside it. Our product schema post walks through what the theme outputs.

What about stars in Google Shopping ads?

That is a separate program. Google Merchant Center's Product Ratings need at least 50 reviews across all products. With fewer, Google says "your product ratings will not show on Google Shopping or Google Ads." It uses a reviews data source uploaded at least once a month, and onboarding typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Fixing page markup does not enroll you.

How we measured

We drew 360 US Shopify storefronts at random from StoreLeads on Oct 21 to 22 2026. 226 homepages loaded and on 128 we loaded a product page (the first linked product that was not a gift card). Each page was loaded once in headless Chrome, desktop, empty cache, and we read the JSON-LD on the rendered page. A rating supplied only as microdata, or a reviews app loaded only on other pages, would not be counted, so the true share missing a rating may be somewhat lower. The full method and limits are in the pillar report.

What should you do next?

Run the Rich Results Test on your best reviewed product today. If no rating shows, work through the table above. Then make sure the rating is earning its place on the page too: our product page benchmarks and review strategy guide cover placement and collection.

While you are in the theme code, check your images. Our alt text findings show 62% (77 of 125) of product pages with large images had at least one with no alt text. And if speed is the bigger problem, start with our speed benchmarks.

Questions, answered

Questions on this,
answered.

Why are my Shopify review stars not showing in Google?

The most common causes are a reviews app whose rich snippet setting is off, a theme and app that output two separate Product blocks, mixed JSON-LD and microdata, or a second app also printing ratings. Google also needs at least one visible review on the page, and it decides whether to show stars. Test one reviewed product in the Rich Results Test to find which applies.

How long does it take for review stars to show in Google?

Judge.me and Loox both say up to 30 days, because Google has to recrawl and reindex the page. Yotpo says to expect about 24 hours for indexing. You can request a recrawl of key product URLs in Google Search Console. Confirm the markup is valid in the Rich Results Test first, so you are not waiting on broken code.

Can I show star ratings on my Shopify homepage in Google?

No. Google treats reviews a business controls about itself as self-serving, and pages using LocalBusiness or Organization markup for them are ineligible for stars. Judge.me also notes Google does not accept review snippets on homepages, all-reviews pages or collection pages. Stars come from individual product pages that show reviews of that product.

Do I need a separate app for Google review stars?

Usually not. Judge.me, Okendo, Yotpo and Loox all document built-in rich snippet output, and Stamped provides a JSON-LD fragment to paste into your theme. Adding an SEO app on top often creates a duplicate aggregateRating, which can stop stars from showing. Check your page source for more than one aggregateRating before installing anything.

Is fixing review schema enough to get stars in Shopping ads?

No. Stars in Google Shopping ads and free listings come from Merchant Center's Product Ratings program. It needs at least 50 reviews across all products, a reviews feed uploaded at least monthly, and onboarding that typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Page markup and the ratings program are separate, so most stores should set up both.
